A Real "Family" Practice.

Being child-friendly begins with being parent-friendly, or so I realized while visiting Dr. Kimberly Burke’s office in San Mateo. A parent herself, Dr. Burke well understands the challenges caregivers face when they need to visit a doctor, but do not have anyone to watch their children in order to be seen. Kimberly not only welcomes kids to her office, but also provides informal daycare via her wonderful assistant, Ana, who is a natural with children.

My husband was able to watch our sons, Noah and Aidan, during the initial visit, but was unable to be with them on my next scheduled appointment. I had no idea how this would work out, but I brought snacks and toys to entertain my kids and hoped for the best. During my acupuncture treatment, Ana held Aidan on her lap, and Noah entertained himself and played with another girl who came there with her mother. When I finished, it was over an hour later, and both kids were fine. I must confess that I was not as relaxed as I would have been had I come to the office alone, but this was a most-appreciated option. I was grateful for Ana's time and kindness, and Dr. Burke's flexibility and understanding.

Kimberly Burke has mentioned that, as parents, "we have to help one another" and she puts her words into action by helping her patients get treated, regardless of daycare options. She demonstrates what it means to have a true family practice, with both parents and children being tended to with care.
